Winter Advice for Dirt Bikes and Quad Bikes

Whilst some riders may retire their dirt bikes or quad bikes to the garage over winter, we know that the cold weather won’t stop most young daredevils. We believe that there’s no need to stop riding during the winter, however, winter biking does require a little more preparation to make sure riders stay safe and comfortable.

Here are our useful tips to keep young riders and their bikes protected during the winter.

Give your bike some extra care

While the weather is cooler, it’s important to keep up regular maintenance on kid’s dirt bikes and quad bikes, ensuring that they continue to operate correctly. A special consideration for petrol bikes is that it’s important to check that anti-freeze levels are kept up to ensure the engine keeps running.

When bikes or quads are not in use, we recommend keeping them covered over winter. Cold weather, and snow in particular, can lead to permanent damage to the bike, so make sure you have a tarpaulin with you if you are traveling with an off-road vehicle.

Don’t ride in extreme conditions

In especially snowy or icy conditions, we would recommend that you stay at home. Without winter spike tyres, dirt bikes lack the right traction to ride safely, so young riders should wait until more extreme weather conditions clear up before taking to the tracks.

Stay hydrated

It’s normal for us not to feel so thirsty in the cold weather but taking in plenty of fluids is very important when out riding in low temperatures. When layering up in winter riding gear, you will still sweat a lot, so you may not feel hot and bothered, dehydration can still set in quickly.

Invest in quality dirt biking gloves

To stay comfortable and safe on off-road bikes, regardless of whether they have 2 or 4 wheels, warm hands make all the difference. Cold numb hands can make it very difficult to stay under control on biking trails or rough terrain, so look for quality, thin gloves that will keep your hands warm and provide plenty of grip.

Whilst thicker gloves may seem to make more sense in cold weather, although they may keep your hands warm, it will probably feel like you are riding in boxing gloves.

Wear layers

In winter weather, you will want to keep your skin covered to prevent it getting chapped. Make sure to choose a high-quality motocross jacket with important features such as removable liners, pockets and vents, and a comfortable fit. Jackets with added padding around the shoulders, back and elbows are also a bonus. A good quality jacket helps to regulate your temperature.

Strength

Dirt bikes take strength to manoeuvre from your leg muscles, quadriceps and hamstrings. In addition, to turn, lift and land dirt bikes it takes a lot of arm strength and precision. Over time you may notice increased strength from operating dirt bikes.

During accelerations up and down uneven hills, your muscles may also begin to tighten to maintain good balance. Over time this will improve, the more you ride.

Calorie Burning

Holding yourself onto fast moving dirt bikes, while enduring sharp turns, bumps and accelerating over hills uses a lot of muscle. You may feel a burn in your major muscle groups, including your legs, arm and core muscles.

Mind

Taking dirt bikes for a ride can help to activate the pre-frontal sections of your brain, as well as improve your cognitive functions. For those who ride more frequently, there is most definitely a difference in levels of brain stimulation, compared to those who don’t.

Riding dirt bikes can also be a big mood enhancer. While enjoying this thrilling experience, it can lead to the release of endorphins and dopamine. This helps to uplift our mood and consequently makes us feel happier.

Riders are encouraged to maintain their best posture to improve their riding performance. This can help with balance and control while on dirt bikes, but also becomes a healthy habit for you too.
