Let’s talk through the important specs:

2019 FTN 50cc

Engine, gears and fuel

The new FTN 50cc features an air cooled, single cylinder 2 stroke engine, with a rated power and rotating speed of 9HP and 9000rpm. The 2 stroke engine provides a significant power boost and a lighter weight when compared with 4 stroke engines, allowing the bike to get up to speed faster. For ease of use for new riders, the gears are fully automatic.

The bike is fuelled by petrol and oil and features a fuel tank capacity of 1.3L and a compress ratio of 11+/-0.6:1.

Dimensions and suitability

The 2019 FTN 50cc features a gross weight of 51kg, a length of 1280mm, by a width of 640mm and a height of 820mm, with a seat height of 610mm, a handlebar height of 800, and a maximum distance from the ground of 300mm. The front wheel features dimensions of 60/100-14” and the larger rear wheel has dimensions of 70/100-12”, ensuring excellent stability.

Suitable for riders of age 12 and above, with a maximum load of 150kg, the FTN 50cc is well suited to a wide range of dirt bike enthusiasts.

Speed and brake system

This bike is capable of reaching speeds of up to 43mph and features front and rear breaking systems (a hydraulic brake on the handle bars and a rear foot brake), helping riders to safely slow down and stop.

Suspension and terrain

Suitable for use on tarmac and rougher off-road terrains, the 2019 FTN 50cc features front and rear suspension. For the front wheel, hydraulic upside-down fork suspension is used, whilst the rear wheel features rear shock absorption suspension, well suited to uneven surfaces. Remember, this is not a road legal bike.

ride on toys

Cruising Around the Street in Style – Ride on Cars for Kids

For many kids, their love of cars starts very early on. By the age of three many children are playing with toy cars, making engine noises, putting on imaginary races and pretending to drive from their booster seat in the back of the car. Toy replicas of popular sports cars and bikes can be great fun, but ride on toys can be an even better way for kids to get behind the wheel.

At Riders & Rollers we supply a great selection of ride on vehicles, from Ford Focus and Minis to Lamborghini, Ferrari or even BMW motorbikes. All models are licensed and replicate the original, making for an even more realistic experience for your kids as they steer their own vehicle.

Unlike some Christmas or Birthday presents, there’s no way that a ride on car or bike would be a one-hit wonder. This is a gift that gives and gives; from their first ride until they outgrow their ride on toy, your kids will be guaranteed hours and hours of fun. With certain models featuring LED lights and auxiliary input for playing music, alongside a two speed 12v engine, ride on toys provide a real driving experience for children.

Children between ages 3 and 7 can gain the full driving experience, taking full control of the foot accelerator (and auto brake on release) and steering, moving at speeds of between 2-3km/h in the low speed setting and 3-4km/h in the high-speed setting. Although children of between 18 and 36 months old can not safely drive a ride on toy, the great news is that ride on vehicles are available with a parental remote control, ensuring that all kids can enjoy the riding experience, whilst the toy is safely controlled by an adult from a short distance away.

ride on

So, other than the obvious fun, what benefits can kids gain from rider on toys?

Outdoor use

In recent years, it has been a well-known problem that children are spending more time indoors than they used to. Easy access to technology such as gaming consoles and tablets mean that children are more interested in staying at home than safely exploring their outdoor surroundings. Ride on toys are designed for outdoor use and will help to encourage your kids to spend more time outside, socialising with other children.

Help develop motor skills

Ride on cars and bikes are a fantastic way of helping to increase kids’ awareness of their surroundings, reaction times and hand-eye coordination, as well as helping to develop their cognitive thinking. All drivers need to start somewhere and kids that are used to handling a ride on toy are better placed than most when they reach 17 and are ready to take driving lessons.

Great for improving imagination

Whilst ride on cars or bikes are limited to low speeds, the fact that licenced ride on vehicles are so realistic makes it so much easier for kids to imagine they are wherever they want to be. Whether children want to pretend they are racing, escaping monsters or dinosaurs, or even just carrying out normal adult chores, a ride on toy helps to set their imagination free and provide endless possibilities.

Engine Rebuilds

When engine failure occurs, in many cases, the piston takes most of the damage. Careful examination of this problem helps us to trace the source of the mechanical or tuning problems that caused the failure. Should you require an engine rebuild as a result of failure, please supply us with the complete engine as it helps us to diagnose the cause of the problem and take the appropriate action to prevent it from reoccurring.

There are several factors that can lead to a 2-stroke crank or the main bearings of an engine to fail. The most common cause is that there is too little oil in the pre-mix, along with bad seals or dirt passing through the air filter and down into the block. The crank bearings are lubricated by the oil in the pre-mix, so when your engine runs on too little, the crank, along with the piston and main bearings will fail.

For a charge of £30 packaging and posting, we provide a send and return service for engines. Please be sure to package your engine carefully as Riders & Rollers is not responsible for incoming damage. We suggest that as well as packaging your engine carefully, you should insure your parts for replacement value as damaged engines could cost hundreds of pounds to replace.

Getting Your Child Started Off on a Dirt Bike

Introducing your child to the world of dirt bikes isn’t just an exciting time for them – it can be just as rewarding (or scary!) for you. When you’re first considering introducing them to the world of powered vehicles, it can be tricky to know how to get them started.

At Riders & Rollers, we’re no strangers to setting kids up for a life on two wheels, and have compiled our top Q and As for getting kids started off.

  1. What age to start them off

The time your child starts off on a dirt bike is entirely dependent on them and you. Every child is different and some take to riding more easily than others. We often find that kids around the age of four find it easier to manoeuvre the bikes and we always recommend that parents are near the track so that they can help them if they fall.

  1. Isn’t racing just for boys?

No! Most of the time boys and girls race together, but when they reach their teenage years, girls may want to be a part of a women’s group.

  1. What type of racing uses a dirt bike?

Kids can either race indoors or outdoors. Indoor tracks have tighter corners and narrower jumps, while the outdoor tracks have more room between jumps and longer stretches to go at, meaning the bikes can go even faster.

  1. What size bike should we go for?

The best piece of advice here is to go for one that fits your child’s size and weight. Some people buy the bigger bikes with the idea that their child will grow into it, but this isn’t necessarily the best thing to do.

Buying a dirt bike that’s just the right fit will ensure that your child can manoeuvre the bike effectively, making it safer and easier to use. Dirt bikes hold their value very well, so outgrown bikes are easy to sell on.

  1. What brand of dirt bike is best?

At Riders & Rollers we stock a range of kids’ buggies, quad bikes, dirt bikes and balance boards in various well-respected brands including Stomp, Thumpstar, iWheel, Skatey and Razor. Our dirt bikes are made by the well revered Falcon, and start at £369.99.

Top Tips for Choosing a Kid’s Quad Bike

If your child loves being outdoors and seeking thrills and adventure, a kid’s quad bike is the perfect vehicle. Whilst dirt bikes are a lot of fun, for a complete beginner, balancing a dirt bike can be very difficult; quad bikes have 4 chunky, sturdy wheels, so they are well balanced, making the riding experience much easier right from the get go.

Whilst there’s no denying that a quad bike is much easier to get the hang of than a kid’s dirt bike, it’s really important that beginners choose the right bike for them. The good news is that there are many choices available on the market, so all children stand a good chance of finding the ideal quad bike. However, with so many different makes and models available, the choice can seem overwhelming. With this in mind, we will look at some of the most important factors to be considered when choosing a bike and the information you’ll need to make a buying decision.

Choosing the right size quad bike

If you are choosing a first quad bike for a child, it’s very important to choose the right size bike. Whilst it’s pretty tempting to buy the bike that will last longest and let your child grow into it, safety has to be the first priority. In terms of the dimensions of the bike, a child should be able to comfortably reach the foot pegs with a good bend in their knee when they sit on it.

Choosing to buy a kid’s quad bike where a child’s feet can only just reach the pegs can be dangerous, as they will not be as secure on the bike as they should be. Choose the bike that is comfortable and safe.

Your child’s weight is also a key factor. First of all, your child should be under a particular quad bike’s weight limit. A child that is too heavy for a quadbike will affect performance and the balance of the bike. However, a rider that is too light for a particular bike may have problems controlling it.

How powerful should the quad bike be?

For a child and a beginner, you should always choose a lower powered quad bike. For example, for a quad bike with a petrol engine, 49cc is ideal for young, inexperienced riders. Restricted speed is also important to help increase safety. Some kid’s quad bikes can be restricted to different speed modes depending on the age and experience of the child.

800W 36V Falcon FT800 Quad Bike

The Falcon FT800 quad bike is available with a 49cc petrol engine and a maximum speed of 25km/h. However, the 800W 36V electric motor version can be restricted to 3 different speed modes. 1 mode allows a maximum speed of 8km/h, whilst the 2nd allows for 15km/h and the 3rd allows a maximum speed of 25km/h.

Manual or automatic?

Generally speaking, most children have no knowledge or experience of manual gears, so an automatic quad bike is usually the more suitable choice.

What terrain is a quad bike suitable for?

For beginners, it’s not safe or advisable to be riding over rough terrain. Most quad bikes for kids are designed to be ridden on concrete and tarmac, or on gentle off-road terrain, such as gravel or relatively flat grass. Due to the low power of beginner’s quad bikes, they would struggle to perform over rougher terrain and so are designed for gentler tracks.

For expert advice on suitable quad bikes for children, contact Riders & Rollers today by calling 0121 666 6434 or send us a message online. Our world class professionals will be happy to assist you.
